Is It Safe to Travel to Colombia?

Is Colombia Safe for Tourism?

Is it safe to travel to Colombia is the most frequently asked question I get when clients want to visit Colombia. The short answer is yes. For the longer answer, read on. I’m going to give you the facts, based on real data from responsible sources, and give you some common sense travel safety advice, explain that the Colombia travel advisories only apply to specific remote regions of the country, and hopefully set your mind at ease

Colombia Tourism Suffers from A Bad Reputation - Thanks Netflix

Colombia’s bad reputation has been exacerbated by movies and Netflix shows like “Narcos”“Blow”, and “Griselda”. These violent portrayals focus on the era of Pablo Escobar and the dominance of drug cartels in the 1980’s and early 90’s, reinforcing negative stereotypes about Colombia.

Pablo Escobar has been dead and gone since 1993. The truth is that Escobar is despised by Colombians as a terrorist criminal, especially in Medellín. Don’t believe the hype that he’s some kind of outlaw folk hero.

Colombia Now Is Very Different from 30 Years Ago

Since the 2016 peace agreement that effectively ended 50+ years of internal armed conflict, Colombia has made significant progress in reducing crime, particularly in its major tourist destinations.

Some formerly violence-torn areas have even transformed themselves into tourist attractions. Medellín’s Comuna 13, once a hotbed of criminal violence, has become world famous drawing crowds daily to see its street art. Former President Bill Clinton visited Medellín in 2017 and declared that “a formerly violent community is now a prosperous and peaceful community”.

Peace Has Transformed Colombia

Relieved from their tragic past of conflict and strife, Colombians reflect a new spirit of optimism, opportunity and possibility. A whole generation of Colombians, called the Children of the Peace, many of whom had moved abroad to flee the violence and disorder, have returned to propel Colombia onto the world stage – this time for the right reasons.

Today the whole world is dancing to hits created by Colombia’s famous musicians like Shakira, J. Balvin, and Carol G.. Colombia now is powered by this new generation of entrepreneurs who have reclaimed and repurposed traditional Colombian products like coffee, chocolate, rum, fashion, and textiles for the 21st century global market.

At Cosmopolitours we connect you with some of these entrepreneurs.  A favorite of mine is a brother-sister team that reclaimed their family’s defunct textile business, and turned it into a sustainable luxury brand. They hired indigenous weavers to revive their traditional techniques and organic material then combined them with cutting-edge design and high-end materials like gold or silver metal thread to create stunning products like tapestries, rugs, purses and luxury bags.  They’ve been featured in major fashion magazines like Vogue,  and their products are in luxury stores around the world including Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom in the US.

Historical Context: Colombia's Troubled Past with Illegal Armed Groups

From 1964 to 2016, Colombia was torn apart by a violent civil war or “Internal Armed Conflict”, caused by a breakdown in civil order due to irreconcilable political differences between the governing right-wing Conservative Party and various left-wing and communist parties over issues like economic inequality, social justice, and infrastructure development.

The armed conflict smoldered along in a relatively limited way until the 1970’s when the Narcos poured jet fuel on the fire. The cartels provided vast sums of cash to both the communist revolutionary groups like the FARC and ELN, as well as right wing paramilitary groups. Pablo Escobar and other Narco cartels purposely turned a smaller limited conflict into an all-out conflagration in order to further destabilize the Colombian Government and law enforcement, and give themselves impunity.

Even at its worst, Colombia’s Civil War was mainly fought in the remote countryside and marginal communities.  Most urban populations experienced the conflict through occasional acts of terrorism and through bloody media reports on TV or newspapers. Of a population of 50 million Colombians, about 7.3 million were direct victims of the conflict themselves as displaced persons or family members killed and injured in the crossfire.

One cannot minimize the tragedy. Every Colombian family was in some way affected by the brutal conflict. And that’s why the Colombians take the current peace process so seriously.  As one of our drivers, a veteran of Colombia’s Armed Forces, remarked to me, “Before, no one could imagine how bad it could get. But now we know, and we’ll never let it happen again.”

The 2016 Colombia Peace Accord Began Colombia’s Safety Transformation

The 2016 peace agreement between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, rebels and other illegal armed groups officially ended the Internal Armed Conflict. The signatories to the accord agreed to reject armed conflict and to instead pursue their aims through the normal political process.

The accord included an immediate decommissioning phase where armed groups on both sides effectively disbanded, with some transforming into political parties. In exchange for a short-term stipend and other reintegration programs, individual combatants turned in their arms, which were publicly destroyed. A truth and reconciliation phase in which amnesty was offered to former combatants who truthfully testified to their own actions that resulted in civilian terror and casualties brought all parties a measure of closure.

Probably the greatest symbol of the success of the peace process was the 2022 election of Gustavo Petro, a former left-wing rebel leader, as President of The Republic of Colombia. President Petro’s policy goal is to bring Total Peace to every aspect of  Colombia.  It’s a very complicated and delicate process, but it’s working.

Colombia Travel Advisory

Several countries, including the USAUK, and Canada, publish a Colombia Travel Advisory warning their citizens to reconsider travel to some regions in Colombia. These advisories sound scary, but the truth is that they are all referring to very isolated remote areas hundreds of miles from where we or any reputable tour operators would send clients.

The UK publishes a helpful map of Colombia illustrating that their Colombia travel advisory applies to specific areas:

6. Mapa

Map of Colombia with Travel Advisory Zones

UK Government’s travel advice map highlights Colombia’s major tourist areas in green, indicating safe zones. It visualizes Colombia’s accessible and secure destinations, reinforcing its overall safety for travelers.

On the UK government’s map above, you can see Colombia’s major cities and tourism areas, Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, etc… are all in the green-colored safe zone.

The UK’s Colombia Travel Advisory actually only applies to remote rural regions (in orange) that can be dangerous due to the presence of dead-ender guerrilla groups who rejected the peace process in order to keep earning money by collaborating with international criminal organizations in drug trafficking and human smuggling. As you can see, those areas are along the Colombia-Venezuela border, the Colombia-Ecuador and Peruvian borders, along the pacific coast from Ecuador to Panama, and a rugged region several hundred miles south of Bogotá.

For a bit of perspective, it’s worth pointing out that both the UK and Canada currently have Travel Advisories regarding travel to the US.

Since 2021 Colombia Tourism Grew 295% While Crime Against Tourists Declined

According to Colombia’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism (MINCIT), the number of international visitors has grown significantly with over 5.8 million tourist arrivals in 2023, a 79% increase over 2022 which saw 4.6 million tourism arrivals, itself a 114% increase compared to 2021 The City Paper Bogota). The most recent monthly numbers from MINCIT imply 2024 arrivals will similarly out pace 2023. Tourists from the United States were the largest number with 1.1 million tourists or 19% of Colombia’s total tourist volume.

Despite this influx of foreign tourists, reports suggest that violent crime rates, in major tourist destinations, have not seen corresponding increases, but rather decreases. Many crime reduction initiatives have been successful, especially in cities like Medellín, Bogotá, and Cartagena.

A showcase of Colombian creativity and global appeal, the ARTBO Art Fair brings together artists, galleries, and art enthusiasts worldwide.

Authoritative sources indicate that crime targeting tourists in Colombia has seen significant declines in violent incidents, particularly since 2021.

Bogotá: In the capital, petty crimes like pickpocketing or purse snatching do happen, just as they do in all tourist destinations in the world. But thanks to increased police presence and surveillance in areas like La Candelaria and Zona Rosa(Dragonfly Intelligence) Violent crimes against tourists have been almost eliminated.. El Dorado International Airport ensures only authorized taxis operate at its terminals to enhance traveler security.

When it comes to crime against tourists, Bogotá compares favorably with New York City tourism crime data. Public transportation in Bogotá, however, poses safety concerns due to potential risks of crime and disruptions caused by strikes, particularly in crowded areas.

Cartagena: Cartagena, a top Caribbean destination, remains one of the safest cities in Colombia, with crime largely limited to petty theft. Cartagena’s crime rate against tourists compares favorably with London where pickpocketing and fraud targeting tourists in areas like the London Eye and Oxford Street are also frequent. In 2021, London had 80,393 reported thefts, mostly concentrated in tourist-heavy zones.

Cali: Tourist areas like San Antonio and El Peñón in Cali have also benefited from increased security. There are some neighborhoods in the east side district of Aguablanca that are rife with violent crime related to gang activity. Just as in New York, Los Angeles or Chicago, one should avoid areas where gangs are active.

Coffee Triangle: The Coffee Triangle (Pereira, Armenia, Manizales) remains a low-crime region. Both it’s picturesque towns and rural areas are ideal for tourism (The City Paper Bogotá).

Medellín: In El Poblado, a top tourist area, homicides dropped from 9 in 2021 to just 2 by mid-2023(Source:Medellin Advisors). However, petty theft and drugging crimes, particularly with scopolamine, have occurred in nightlife settings(ASIS International)(Voice of America). Medellín’s homicide rate in 2023 was lower than that of several U.S. cities, including St. Louis and New Orleans(Medellin Guru)(Travel Safe – Abroad).

Colombia’s Improved Safety Is Attracting International Events

Beyond all the facts and figures above that show it’s safe to travel to Colombia, also consider that major events attracting attendees from all over the world are regularly being held in Colombia. Here are just three:

is a premier global event for professionals in the field of aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Held every two years, this congress brings together top plastic surgeons, researchers, and medical professionals from around the world to discuss the latest advancements and trends in aesthetic surgery.

The International Art Fair ARTBO (Bogotá) is one of the most prestigious contemporary art fairs in Latin America. Held annually, ARTBO serves as a major cultural event, drawing the attention of artists, collectors, curators, international galleries from the United States, Germany, France, and Argentina, among others, and art enthusiasts from around the globe.

The International Coffee Producer & Roaster Forum (PRF) is a prominent two-day event that unites coffee professionals and industry leaders from around the globe. The most recent forum took place in 2023, at Plaza Mayor in Medellín. The event featured diverse activities, including coffee championships, panel discussions, and workshops, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange within the international coffee community.

Travel Safely in Colombia: 10 Common Sense Tips

Despite the all the improvements, tourists in Colombia should practice some common sense precautions, just as they should in any other destination:

  1. Avoid Petty Theft: Pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and ATM fraud can occur in tourist areas. Don’t wear flashy clothes or jewelry in public. Colombians say “no dar papaya”, which roughly translated means don’t give would-be thieves a juicy target.  Don’t carry large amounts of cash (Apple Pay is widely accepted). Wear your bags, purses, or backpacks securely across the front of your body.
  2. Beware of Scammers from Online Dating Apps: Criminals use dating apps to lure tourists into dangerous situations where they may be robbed. In 2023 a U.S. citizen from Minnesota, was kidnapped and killed after being lured through a dating app while visiting Medellín.
  3. Beware of Street Drug Dealers and Prostitutes: Simply put, if you deal with shady people, shady things can happen.
  4. Practice Situational Awareness: Always know where you are, who you’re with, what’s happening around you, and how to get back to your lodgings safely. For example, if you are in a souvenir marketplace and notice that people are leaving, take that as a signal that you should probably wrap things up too.
  5. Don’t Hail Taxis Off The Street: Use rideshare apps. US-based apps like Uber and Cabify work in Colombia.  A local favorite app is DiDi Rider.
  6. Listen to Your Guides and Local Authorities: It should go without saying, but it’s worth emphasizing: If your guide is telling you to avoid some place or thing, follow their instructions! Same goes for the Colombian National Police who have created dedicated units and rules for dealing with tourists.
  7. Make Sure Someone Always Knows Where You Are, and Where You Will Be: When traveling with others, make sure they know where you are going and when to expect you. Here’s a simple example: “Hey Guide or Travel Buddy, I need to run to the restroom. I’ll meet you by that statue in 5 minutes.”
  8. Purchase Adequate Travel Insurance: A good policy should include coverage for lost or stolen property, flight cancellation or delay, emergency medical care, and emergency evacuation and repatriation.
  9. Monitor Local Media for Real-Time Updates: During emergencies such as earthquakes, protests, and volcanic eruptions, it is crucial to monitor local media. Stay informed through local news reports and social media channels to receive timely updates and safety instructions from authorities.
  10. Stay in Touch with Your Embassy: Register your contact info with your home country’s embassy or consulate in case of an emergency.
